About:

Open Container: Contact Improvisation as Relational Intelligence is a workshop that attempts to answer the long-lasting questions: how do we work and be together? How to create environments that allow the growth of humanity? In the context of the contemporary world, what does it mean to be in contact? In response to the rise of artificial intelligence, how not to be assimilated by it? I propose a leading hypothesis through the qualities and values that practitioners in Contact Improvisation, and other eastern martial arts such as Tai Chi and Qi Gong, have offered. The skill of deep listening, trust, and negotiation will co-create the next emergent moment, and will be the remedy to heal this world.

Octavia Butler in the Parable of Sower wrote “all that you touch, you change, all that you change, changes you”. Contact Improvisation is about touch and change, and it collapses the distance from a far cry to a close vibration wherein we start to deeply listen to the human conditions. I want to use the studio rehearsal space as a radical inquiry into how we change each other.

In this workshop, we will explore somatic exercises that guide our attention from the body to how the body relates to the world. We will be in touch with ourselves, others, space that holds us, past selves, concepts we want a tactile connection with, material we want to explore with deep listening.. It’s appropriate for anyone who’s open to move.
