Identity Project

Students, faculty and staff may often choose to use names, pronouns and gender identities that are not in line with their legal documentation. Through both our technological systems and daily usage, CalArts is supporting and honoring all community members through this new project.

Identity Form Launch: January 2019

The Identity Project is officially live! This means all members of the CalArts community are able to update their identity information throughout all Institute-managed systems using a simple form available through the secure HubHelper site. 

If you would like to update your name, pronoun, or gender in CalArts records, please log into HubHelper to access the Chosen Name and Gender Identity forms.

Because Names and Pronouns Matter

The Identity Project is a student-driven, Institute-wide initiative that upgrades CalArts' technological infrastructure to both honor and align with the diverse identities of all students, staff and faculty. When fully updated, the software systems used across campus on a daily basis will incorporate chosen name, chosen pronoun and gender identity. 

Through the creation of a more inclusive space for the full diversity of all identities — both on campus and online — the Identity Project should have a positive impact to every member of our community, and not just those who request to change their identifiers as a result of the project.  

Uses of Chosen and Legal Names

Because of legal requirements, there are instances and documents where a legal name must be used. Here's a quick breakdown between the two categories:

  • Graduation Materials
  • Hub Username
  • Mentor Reports & Graduation Reviews

Legal Name Used

  • Diploma (unless requested by the student)
  • Financial Aid Documents
  • Health Insurance Cards
  • Immigration Documents
  • Official Transcripts
  • Paychecks/Reimbursement Checks
  • Purchase Cards (PCARDS) and Statements
  • Retirement Plans
  • Tax Documents
