Our campus has an indescribable energy, drawing strength from the vibrant interpersonal creative exchanges among students and faculty. More than a shared space, it is, above all, a place where boundaries are tested, innovative ideas percolate and manifest, and creativity is honored at every corner.
The center of campus life is our sprawling, five-level, 500,000-square-foot Main Building. In keeping with Walt Disney’s original vision for CalArts, this is where different artistic disciplines converge as they share space under one roof. This structure houses classrooms, art studios, animation studios, music rehearsal rooms, and dance studios; galleries; theaters for drama, dance, and film; a music hall; costume, scenery, and machine shops; photography labs; computer and media labs; editing suites for film and video; a digital recording studio; the library; a cafeteria and coffee house, and more.
Other campus buildings include the Chouinard Hall dorms, the Ahmanson Hall apartment dorms, the Eli and Edythe Broad graduate art studios, and several annexes filled with additional classrooms, studios, a writing lab, and other facilities. Tennis and basketball courts, an outdoor swimming pool, and fitness facilities are available throughout the year, while spacious lawns dotted with shade trees, open fields, and sloping hillsides provide natural spaces for studying, relaxing, or casual sports.
