CAP Photography Programs

CAP/Santa Clarita Valley Boys & Girls Club Photography Program

This 10-week photography program takes place at the California Institute of the Arts during the fall semester. Students work closely with instructors investigating notions of self-expression and community through their photographic work. Presentations about the history and art of photography are offered throughout the semester. The students’ original works are exhibited at CalArts and other venues throughout Los Angeles. Enrollment in this class is still open.

CAP/Fiat Lux Youth Photography Program

This program provides 10 weeks of instruction during the spring for high school students. Students will learn how to use a manual 35mm camera, how to process black and white film, and how to print in the darkroom. Participants engage with CalArts faculty and student instructors in a productive environment where technical and conceptual skills expand. Participants' work will be celebrated in public exhibitions at CalArts and other venues.

  • Dates: Feb. 15, 2014–April 26, 2014 (No class Mar. 29)
  • Time: Saturdays, 10 am–4 pm

Please note: An application is no longer required for admission into this class. Bus transportation to the program is free and available only on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pick-up and drop-off times are as follows:

  • Ramon C. Cortines School for the Visual and Performing Arts pick-up at 8:30 am, drop-off at 5:30 pm
  • Cleveland High School pick-up at 9:15 am, drop-off at 4:45 pm deadline

CAP/Ramon C. Cortines High School for Visual and Performing Arts Photography Program

This class builds students’ skills in foundational darkroom techniques, film development, black and white printing, and introduces them to alternative photographic techniques, including cyanotypes, photograms, and solar printing. Students also participate in field trips to world-class arts institutions across Los Angeles. The class culminates with a public exhibition.
