Graduate Specializations
The Herb Alpert School of Music (HASOM) at CalArts works towards developing the entire artist and focuses on individual pathways. The faculty are interested in seeing and hearing application materials that offer a sense of who you are as an artist. You are required to submit an online portfolio that showcases your work as a creative artist at this point in your life. Live auditions/interviews are encouraged and audition/interview days are scheduled on campus and in several other cities (The exceptions are the Specializations in Composition & Experimental Sound Practices, Jazz, Music Technology, and World Music which accept online portfolio submission only). Applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and interests are encouraged to apply.
All MFA students will apply to the Program in Music - MFA and declare a specialization on the application. Before applying, be sure to familiarize yourself with the curriculum, faculty, student work and facilities associated with your area of interest.
