Typical BFA1-1 Enrollments

The following represents typical course enrollments for new BFA1-1 students. These are offered only as initial guidelines, and all students are advised to review and finalize their course enrollments with their faculty mentor during Orientation Week.

Typical BFA1-1 Shared Curriculum Course Enrollments for All Specializations

Students will either be preloaded in these courses or be placed into them by examination during Orientation Week. Students cannot enroll in these courses online.

  • CCIS100 Introduction to Critical Studies (3 units)
  • MAIC100 Worlds of Music I (2 units)
  • ICOM111 Intro to Sound Production (2 units)
  • Music Theory & Skills Classes (depending on placement by exam during Orientation Week)
    • either all three of
      • MTHY001 Fundamental Musicianship (2 units)
      • MTHY002 Theory Performance Lab (2 units)
      • MPRF103 Class Piano (1 unit)
    • or both of
      • MTHY101 Musicianship Skills A (2 units)
      • MTHY111 Tonal Theory A (2 units)

Exception: Jazz majors will typically take MTHY108 Transcription Skills (2 units) before taking MTHY111 Musicianship Skills A. (Jazz Program faculty will advise during Orientation Week.)
