The Alumni Engagement Office is excited to announce the launch of an alumni-to-alumni mentor pilot program.

This program aims to help individuals starting their careers figure out their next steps with a fellow alum who has already navigated a similar professional path. Goal program outcomes for mentees include increasing professional networks, gaining better strategies to move forward in their chosen career track, and fostering professional skills and growth.

Mentoring will run February through August 2018. Mentoring can be conducted over the phone/virtual and need not be geographically situated near the mentee. The program consists of at least 1 monthly contact—in-person, email, or video chat—and is generally a 1-to-2-hour monthly time commitment. Note: Mentees may be mentored in individual or group settings, per the preference of the mentor. Group setting benefits include an expanded network with people in similar fields, in addition to more momentum and energy typical in a group setting.

SAVE THE DATE: A kickoff orientation lunch will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 to introduce mentors and mentees. The first mentoring session will also be held at orientation.

Mentor applications will be open through Monday, December 18, 2017

Mentee applications will open Monday, January 22 to Friday, February 16, 2018

Tips to be a successful mentor

  • Develop mutual trust and respect
  • Listen actively both to what is being said and how it is being said
  • Ask open, supportive questions and provide constructive feedback
  • Help the mentee solve their own problem, rather than giving direction
  • Focus on the mentee’s development
  • Be responsive; try to reply to the mentee within 2 to 4 days

Tips to be a successful mentee

  • Discuss your needs and expectations with your mentor up front
  • Be receptive to suggestions and feedback
  • Understand this is NOT a job or internship placement program
  • Act professionally throughout the program and respond to your mentor in a timely manner, recognizing they are also professionals volunteering their time

Mentors' rosters have a limited number of spots and are first-come, first served. If your desired mentor's roster becomes full, we will contact you to see if you would like to work with an available mentor.
