Description:

The School of Film/Video at CalArts seeks candidates for a full-time visiting faculty in the Film Directing Program for an appointment of one academic year. This unique MFA ONLY program in narrative filmmaking fosters the individual voice of the filmmaker in developing innovative approaches to narrative in cinema.

The program embraces a diverse range of aesthetics and traditions, encouraging students to find their voice within a constant questioning and expansion of the definition of narrative cinema itself.  The work our students make is aesthetically diverse, exploring a variety of methodologies from independent dramatic filmmaking to hybrid and experimental narrative practices.

We seek candidates who have an enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to work with a broad spectrum of graduate makers. They should demonstrate a strong interest in modes of teaching that are in line with CalArts' commitment to radical pedagogy.

We are looking for candidates who are active filmmakers with an established body of work as a writer/director/maker and a curiosity towards working with students with expansive methodologies and practices. Alums of the program include Andrew Ahn, Eliza Hittman, Hannah Peterson, Ilana Coleman, and others.

Areas we are interested include (but are not limited to) writer/directors, producer/directors, filmmakers that work collaboratively with actors to develop work, makers who work between fiction and documentary and other models of making . We are particularly interested in makers whose work engages with the representation of historically marginalized and underrepresented communities, histories and narratives.

CalArts and the School of Film/Video value the individuality of artists and welcome the addition of unique and inventive voices to our diverse, collaborative community. We seek to employ faculty who can engage our diverse communities of learners at the highest levels of artistic endeavor and critical thinking. We welcome candidates who possess a demonstrated worldview and cultural competency to support teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students of varied backgrounds, capabilities, perspectives, social identities and gender expressions. CalArts is an equal-opportunity employer.
