CalArtians receive 2009 Guggenheim Fellowships
The 2009 John Simon Guggenheim Fellows have been announced and we are proud to congratulate CalArts faculty and alumni among this year’s recipients. The list includes School of Art Dean Thomas Lawson, faculty members Wadada Leo Smith (School of Music), Shirley Tse (School of Art) and John Haskell (Writing Program in the School of Critical Studies). Alumni Nancy Chunn (Chouinard Art Institute, 1969) and Faith Wilding (MFA 1973) are also recognized.
Also, 2009 Guggenheim recipient Walid Raad is currently presenting the installation, Scratching on Things I Could Disavow: A History of Art in the Arab World / Part 1_Volume 1_Chapter 1 (Beirut: 1992-200), in the gallery at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater) in downtown Los Angeles.
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation was established by United States Senator John Simon Guggenheim and his wife in 1925 to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions, irrespective of race, color or creed.
