March 12: Message from the Dean to all students taking Critical Studies Classes

The following message was distributed from the Dean of Critical Studies to all students taking Critical Studies Classes

As you know all classes for your métier and Critical Studies will be moved on-line in the next week, with remote instruction beginning March 23. In Critical Studies our objective is to ensure continuity with the classes that you signed up for and for you to develop your projects, papers and ideas as you move forward towards the end of the semester.

We understand that this situation and how we will have to alter how your classes are delivered may seem a little bewildering, but we are here to help and support you. Your instructors will be on line and able to answer any questions you have about their classes. We value your well-being and your education and we will support you to the best of our ability.

Below, we have some helpful advice regarding your Critical Studies classes:

  • Make sure that you are checking your CalArts email account regularly for updates. Look for emails from your Critical Studies instructors who will contact you with information about your classes and with revised syllabi that guide you through the next few weeks.
  • If you can download and sign up for accounts on Zoom and skype, this will help you prepare for any on-line seminars and lectures.
  • Absences: it is important that you follow your instructor’s directions for how you are to participate in the on-line components of their classes. This may require participating in on-line discussions during the course’s originally scheduled days and times. Failure to do so will be viewed in terms of the learning outcomes and it may affect your grade.
  • Make your instructor aware of any technological limitations you may have so that any specific arrangements can be made. The Institute will also be sending you general instructions on on-line software and some helpful training webinars.

If you have any questions our office is open and we can respond to you as soon as possible.
