CalArts Office of Facilities Development and Management, under the new management of Vice President Troy E. Allen, is currently engaged in or planning a number of significant construction and maintenance projects to upgrade, update, and repair CalArts’ academic, administrative, and residential facilities.
Among the projects identified in recent assessment reports ordered by Facilities Development and Management are substantial maintenance and upgrades to the interior plumbing systems and roof of Ahmanson Residence Hall. Originally scheduled to take place primarily over the summers of 2023 and 2024 to avoid disrupting student residents, these projects have been fast-tracked due to recent extreme weather events and critical maintenance needs. Ahmanson Hall Maintenance Spring 2023
C-Block (C1–C3)
Issues:
- Compromised interior plumbing lines resulting in water intrusion and damage in C1
Remediation:
- Replacement of plumbing lines throughout C-Block
- Repair/replacement of all water damaged materials including flooring, millwork, and finishes
- Mold remediation in kitchen and restrooms
Accommodations:
- C1 residents have been relocated to Chouinard Hall or off-site housing
- C2 & C3 residents relocated to Chouinard Hall or hotel if requested
- Amenities have been provided (i.e.: mini-fridge and meal plan)
- Packing materials and relocation support provided to students
D-Block (D1 & D2)
Issues:
- Leaking exterior roof and joints resulting in water intrusion and damage
Remediation:
- All areas of water intrusion will be identified and repaired
- All damaged areas have been demolished
- Drain pipes, insulation, drywall, flooring, structural wood, and exterior deck to be replaced as needed
Accommodations:
- Residents have been relocated to Chouinard Hall or off-site housing
- Amenities have been provided (i.e.: mini-fridge and meal plan)
- Packing materials and relocation support provided to students
