An End-of-Semester Message from the Dean

Dear Theater Students,

First of all, I am writing to say congratulations to you! This year the world was faced with an unprecedented challenge, and you all have shown great courage and fortitude during this difficult time. I have seen your portfolios online and many of the videos from your scene work and self-tapes, and was moved by your creativity and capacity to adapt - ever-present attributes of true artists. I hope the semester fostered moments of discovery, experimentation, and beauty - even in these most challenging times.

Please join me in sending a special congratulations to all our 2020 School of Theater graduates! Now more than ever, we look to you to help lead the next generation of art-makers and innovators. We are thrilled at your achievement and are so proud of you!

As you finish this academic year, I want the whole community to know that faculty, staff, and the dean’s office are busy planning for next year. We are currently in the process of imagining exciting new production opportunities as well as a variety of new curricular initiatives. Crucially, please know that we plan to provide significant in-person engagement.

Simultaneously, we remain committed to the utmost health and safety of our entire community. Our plans will always follow the directives of public health experts and local authorities. Part of our planning will be how to provide the singular CalArts experience with attention to social distancing protocols, classroom configurations, event possibilities and sizes, and other relevant policies, procedures, and safety measures. I promise to keep you updated on the evolving fall picture.

I look forward to welcoming each and every one of you back to campus in the fall and, in the meantime, please stay safe and healthy.

We will overcome this unprecedented challenge together. Have a wonderful summer!

Warm regards,
Travis
