CalArts Office of International Relations and CultureHub Present: A Hip-Hop Cyber Cypher

INTERNATIONAL: A cypher is a collective circle of self-expression and, often, competition in which B-boys, B-girls, Emcees, Human Beatboxers, poets and other Hip-Hop heads gather to create sound and movement improvisation and practice their craft.  The Hip-Hop Cyber Cypher is the first CalArts student co-produced CultureHub collaborative exchange. Through Telepresence (live video), CalArts students will freestyle lyrics and beats with The Hip Hop Re:Education Project artists at CultureHub NY.

Austin Antoine is a Rapper, Singer, Songwriter, Actor. Austin was raised in Laurel, Maryland and moved to California to pursue his passion for performance. He is in his final year at CalArts pursuing a BFA in Acting. During Austin’s first year at CalArts, he co-created the multicultural performance group TheyGotTime (TGT) with Jordon Waters. This March, Austin will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for Longest Freestyle Rap, currently set at 13 hours and 23 minutes. Event Co-Producer

Jordon Waters is an interdisciplinary performing artist. With an extensive dance background, Jordon is concurrently an actor, producer and editor. Jordon is in his final year at CalArts pursuing a BFA in Dance and has performed at renowned venues such as REDCAT and La Jolla Playhouse.  Jordon recently choreographed a piece featuring Austin Antoine and Joseph Santos for the 2013 CalArts Open House Dance Concert.  He is currently working on an exploratory student film project on Commedia dell'arte as well as krump, contemporary, and ballet dance styles. Joseph Apolonio Santos is an internationally touring, interdisciplinary artist with a primary focus on theatrical and filmed entertainment.  Joseph is pursing his final year as a BFA in acting at CalArts.  Along with Austin and Jordon, he is founding member of TGT.  A hip-hop culture fanatic, Joseph dabbles in the art of rhyming under the alias “JAS”.  He showcases his southern upbringing along with ambitions to come with the use of slick metaphors and rhyme schemes.  He is currently listening to the new B.I.G. Sean mixtape "Detroit" on repeat.  Event Co-Producer

Justin Jackson is a Singer, Songwriter, Musician. Born on the south side of Chicago, Justin attended a highly competitive performing arts high school for his final two years. Justin began playing the piano at the age of six and has honed his talent throughout his adolescence. Justin also developed a passion for singing and songwriting since the age of four. He is currently a first year BFA of the Music School at CalArts and looks to make a big contribution to the music industry in the near future.

Mike Merchant is an Actor, Rapper, Songwriter.  Originally from the Bronx in New York, Mike moved to Maryland at the age of seventeen.  Five years later, he made his way to California to pursue his first year as a CalArts BFA acting student.

Noah Gibbings is a student of the CalArts Musical Arts Program and currently pursuing his BFA in acting. Gibbings began writing and recording rap at the age of twelve. By fifteen, Gibbings had recorded two mixtapes entitled, "In Search of Clarity," and "Blue Ego," and opened for hip-hop recording artist, Twista.  Gibbings currently splits his time between writing pop songs, hip-hop songs and acting.
