The Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation will present its 2017 festival at REDCAT this October. Blending an appreciation of classical animation with the sensibilities of avant-garde cinema and the visual culture of alternative comics, the Eyeworks programs showcase abstract animation and unconventional character animation.
Eyeworks will take place at REDCAT on Saturday, October 21. Two programs of short films combine classic and contemporary work. Highlights include films from Pat O’Neill, Barbara Hammer, Jan Svankmajer, Jaakko Pallasvuo, Annapurna Kumar, and Sarina Nihei. Works will be screened on 16mm and on video.
Following the two programs of short films will be a screening and conversation with special guest Jacolby Satterwhite. Satterwhite’s work uses performance and 3D animation to engages issues of technology, fantasy, the body, queer culture, the archive, and his own personal and family history. His work has been shown at MoMA PS1, Whitechapel Gallery, the Smithsonian, the 2014 Whitney Biennial, and he was given a United States Artists Fellowship in 2016. Satterwhite will present several recent works, followed by a moderated discussion and an audience Q&A.
Eyeworks is a curated annual festival that exhibits classic and contemporary experimental animation. Eyeworks focuses on animated films that express singular creative vision, personal dedication, and imaginative technical approaches. Founded in Chicago in 2010 by filmmakers Alexander Stewart and Lilli Carré, Eyeworks has presented screenings in Stockholm, Helsinki, Zagreb, and Bologna; as part of the Animation Block Party, the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival, and the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo; and at CalArts, Dartmouth College and VCU.
