Pia Borg's haunting essay films combine striking elements - hidden historical documents, alternate world narrative and dreamlike visual fantasy - into unsettling landscapes of inner and outer worlds. Abandoned Goods (2014, co-directed with Ed Lawrenson) is a portrait of people detained in a psychiatric hospital over decades who left behind a remarkable body of outsider art; Silica(2017) "probes territorial constructs and the boundaries of the real and the mediated in an opal mining town in the South Australian desert... Silica probes ideas of 'value', which support not only the gem trade but wider questions of identity, mythology and cosmology." (P.B.) A celebrated animator as well as documentary filmmaker, Borg was recently named one of "25 New Faces of Independent Film" in Filmmaker Magazine.
