U.S. Premieres

The expressive duo of Silvia Tarozzi (violin) and Deborah Walker (cello) join CalArts composer and violist Eyvind Kang to present the U.S. premiere of recent works by the innovative French composer Pascale Criton. A former student of microtonal pioneer Ivan Wyschnegradsky and spectralist Gérard Grisey, Criton is internationally known for her  use of specific tunings with minute intervals. In this program, the instruments are tuned to 1/16th of a tone, an interval barely perceptible to the ear, generating effects that alter our perception of timbre, rhythm and time. The Tarozzi-Walker Duo has been collaborating with Criton since 2008, reaching a unique sound in microtonal extended techniques for strings, breaking down the barriers of what is usually playable and audible.
