Can art change the world? Climate change, food security, racial disparity, suppressed histories, social strife -- are challenges for which some of today’s most dimensional artists are offering solutions through their work. Beyond high-profile galleries, big-ticket Broadway theatres, and Hollywood studios, there is an art that makes a profound difference. Critic, curator and theatre-maker Carey Lovelace will describe Social Sculpture, a term coined by revolutionary German artist Joseph Beuys, the idea that society is an artwork we all shape. She’ll chart her own journey from fledgling Cal Arts student at the Institute’s founding, through Paris, and into New York’s experimental art and theatre worlds – to her founding of Visions2030, an initiative dedicated to harnessing the artistic imagination to create new paradigms and models of society.
