Block A Elevator

going up or going down? is a site-specific, living installation involving live dance and music, taking place in and outside of the A block elevator at CalArts. The work explores notions of liminal space and examines the body’s gestural and emotional relationship to liminality through movement, glitch and sound. As well as playing on the general functionality and socialized rules of the elevator itself. The performers are invited to explore moments of liminality in their own lives, and to then embody them through means of improvisational scores. Spectators are invited to come and view from outside of the elevator on floors 3 and 4, you can choose to stay on either floor, or to rotate between them using the alternate elevator around the corner, or the staircase. Each floor will present a different show. Outside of the elevator is the social lounge space. Come spectate, lounge, and investigate your own relationships to liminal spaces. Will you be going up? Or down? Join us, April 22nd at 7pm.
