CalArts’ Student Health Center (SHC) provides students with convenient access to healthcare right on campus.
An on-site nurse provides general care, such as first aid for injuries, treatment for minor illnesses, and consultations on health problems. If it is necessary for a student to see an outside physician, they can attain a referral from the SHC for radiology, labs, and other related exams.
CalArts partners with Sam Dixon Family Health Center and Henry Mayo Newhall Primary Care to provide medical and sexual health services on campus. Their services are provided free to all students; however, any treatment associated with outside referrals will be charged to the student’s health-insurance plan. Students who carry their own health insurance and are not covered by CalArts’ health plan will receive referrals and prescriptions directly, so they may arrange for care or obtain medication with a specialist or pharmacy covered under their insurance plan.
Appointments are encouraged, but we will do our best to accommodate walk-ins if we have an open spot.

Immunization requirements
Immunizations and screening
In an effort to keep our community healthy, all students are required to have certain immunizations on file with the Student Health office. All incoming CalArts students are required to log in to the Student Health Portal, enter all immunizations dates, complete a tuberculosis screening questionnaire, and upload supporting documentation of vaccinations or immunity by Monday, Aug. 5, 2024 for fall 2024 admissions.
All vaccination records in a language other than English will need to be translated by a certified translator.
Students who qualify for Medi-Cal can access free and low-cost vaccines. Those covered under insurance should go to their medical provider.
Required immunizations
California Institute of the Arts requires new students to submit the following, as part of the admission requirements:
- Copy of full immunization history, including:
- Proof of receiving TWO doses of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) OR a positive titer (blood test) showing immunity.
- Tuberculosis (TB) screening or test given within six months prior to your first day of class. The TB screening questionnaire is on the Student Health Portal.
- Students living in the residence halls or apartments through CalArts’ housing program must have at least one dose of meningitis vaccine (MCV4 or MPSV4) before your move-in date. If you received a dose when you were under 16 years old, you will need a booster shot (second dose). If you received a dose at age 16 years or older, then no additional booster shot is needed.
Students with a medical or religious/philosophical exemption must submit an exemption form.
Submitting immunization forms
Email is not a secure method to submit immunization requirements.
CalArts students can upload immunization forms, access your immunization records, and send and receive secured messages to and from your medical healthcare providers on campus through calarts.studenthealthportal.com.
