Respiratory viruses, like influenza (flu), COVID-19, and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) circulate year-round in California, but are typically more active in fall and winter.
Respiratory viruses can cause cold- or flu-like symptoms. They can spread through the air by coughing or sneezing. You can also pick up the virus by touching contaminated items and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
COVID-19 exposure
Anyone who has been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 does NOT need to quarantine unless they are experiencing symptoms. Every exposed person must take a test within 3-5 days, wear a mask for 10 days, and monitor their symptoms.
COVID-19 testing and reporting
If a student, faculty, or staff member shows symptoms of COVID-19 or other respiratory illness, you should find a testing site.
If you test positive for COVID-19, you must isolate and report your status by emailing healthcompliance@calarts.edu. The COVID Compliance Team will reach out with further instructions.
COVID-19 protocol and guidance
CalArts follows recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the California Department of Public Health. In alignment with these guidelines, updated in January 2024, individuals who test positive for COVID-19 should isolate. You may return to class or work when, for at least 24 hours, both of these things are true:
- Your symptoms are getting better overall
- You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication)
When you are feeling well and isolation has ended, you must continue to wear a mask for at least five days. You do not need proof of a negative test to return to campus.
To keep our community safe and healthy, these guidelines are advisable for all respiratory illnesses, such as flu or RSV, as well as for COVID-19.
