Creating opportunities for collaboration and driving innovation across disciplines, the CHANEL Center for Artists and Technology (CCAT) will exemplify how corporate philanthropy—as demonstrated by CHANEL’s transformative gift—enables arts institutions like CalArts to lead the way in the discovery and activation of new knowledge.
Artists, technologists, academics, and corporations operate in distinct spheres, which limits opportunities for collaboration. Yet the most significant technological and societal advances occur where these domains intersect. CCAT offers a model for these spheres to connect, becoming an incubator where artists imagine and generate new uses for technology, and technologists benefit from the perspective of artists.
Shaping the future of arts education
The future of arts education lies in partnership, not only among individual disciplines, but across domains of research and knowledge creation. Since its inception, CalArts has brought artists from throughout the visual, performing, media, and literary arts together to teach, learn, and experiment in a community of the arts. CCAT extends this legacy, infusing spaces throughout the Institute with the rapid evolution of technologies to shape what’s next.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning
Digital Imaging
CCAT will begin with two nodes of research: Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning, and Digital Imaging. The research outcomes defined in these spaces will be developed through exploration by CalArtians—faculty and students alike—and visiting experts. The knowledge they create will reach beyond the Institute’s doors and across industries, shaping the landscape of culture and technology in the world.
