School of Art
At CalArts, the spring semester opens with Winter Session, a unique few weeks set aside for intensive, hands-on learning and skill-building.
Known as Practicum in the School of Art, BFA students have the opportunity to participate in a series of targeted technical workshops. These workshops are carefully designed to deliver short-term, high-intensity training in specific mediums, allowing students to build or refine technical skills that are essential to their artistic development. BFA students can dive deeply into specialized areas such as printmaking, ceramics, digital media, metalworking, or other focused art practices that expand their creative toolkit and explore new possibilities in their work.
For MFA students, Winter Session offers valuable time for focused studio work, where they can delve deeper into their personal projects, experiment with new techniques, and make significant progress on ongoing artworks. This period is especially beneficial for dedicated studio time, offering graduate students the chance to fully immerse themselves in their artistic process without the coursework demands of the regular semester. Additionally, graduate students are encouraged to schedule studio meetings with faculty and advisors during Winter Session.
