The School of Art at CalArts offers a variety of programs to support students and recent graduates in their artistic and professional development.
These opportunities are aimed at fostering creative growth, providing exposure, and supporting innovative projects.
Reef Residency
The School of Art is pleased to support recent graduates through the CalArts Reef Residency. Each year, three students from the School of Art receive access to studio space in a large shared open studio, additional access to exhibition spaces, and a grant to support their work.

Tropical Lab workshop
Every summer, one or two students from the School of Art participate in Tropical Lab, an intensive two-week art workshop organized by LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore. Tropical Lab brings together more than 20 art students from around the world to interact and learn from international and Singaporean artists and curators from the faculty of Fine Arts at LASALLE and LASALLE’s Institute of Contemporary Art Singapore. Participants work through an annual theme that animates a series of presentations, seminars, dialogues, and trips, culminating in a final project.
Dee Williams Memorial Travel Grant
Each spring semester, the School of Art awards a number of art students the Dee Williams Memorial Travel Grant, funded by the Michael Asher Foundation. These grants are designed to support summer travel in pursuit of an artistic project. The travel period can range from three weeks up to three months, and can be international or within the United States. Interested students can speak with their mentor or School of Art staff.
