  8. Winter Session

At CalArts, the spring semester opens with a unique two-week period known as Winter Session. Students engage in self-directed initiatives outside of their curricular metier, while they explore crossover among programs, participate in intensive study, focus on skill-building and interdisciplinary endeavors, or investigate new and unfamiliar topics.

Winter Session provides an enriching and progressive start to the semester, as students focus deeply on one endeavor, rather than working on many things simultaneously. Students can learn individually or collaborate with other students, stimulated by creative and intellectual growth. The program will also provide a reflective space within the curriculum that will allow students to augment their professional knowledge and skills in innovative ways. Upon completing the Winter Session, students will expand and refine their skills, gain exposure and make discoveries in areas beyond their metier or regular course work.

The School of Theater organizes the Winter Session options into five categories. Students will meet with their mentors and choose from the following:

  • Interschool: Classes offered throughout the institute that enable students to crossover among programs.
  • Winter Lab: Space and support for student-generated work; interdisciplinarity encouraged.
  • Curricular Production: Expanded engagement in School of Theater/CNP projects.
  • Individual or Group Research: Learning independently or in a group setting.
  • Skills Development/Practice: Gaining and refining your artistic practice.
