Janet Sarbanes (Ph.D. UCLA) is the author of a work of hybrid theory, Letters on the Autonomy Project (Punctum Books), and two short story collections: Army of One (Otis) and The Protester Has Been Released (C & R). See: janetsarbanes.net.

Her research interests, which span her critical and creative work, include the intersection of art and politics; institutional critique; and aesthetic and political theories and practices of autonomy. Recent courses include Art, Politics, Autonomy; Into the Radical Imaginary: Contemporary Perspectives on Art and Struggle; Direction: Utopia; and Ecofeminisms: Practices of Survivance. Her current research focuses on revolutionary feminism and gender and politicity.
 
The recipient of a Creative Capital/Andy Warhol art writer’s grant, Sarbanes has published art criticism and other critical writing in museum catalogs, anthologies, and journals including East of Borneo, Afterall, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. Her essay on Shaker aesthetics and utopian communalism received the Eugenio Battisti prize from the Society for Utopian Studies.
 
She teaches in the MA Aesthetics and Politics and the MFA Creative Writing and serves as Director of Faculty Affairs.
