One of four specializations within the MFA World Music Performance program, Balinese and Javanese Music and Dance provides a comprehensive exploration of the music and dance of Bali and Java with a full instrument collection.
Through the MFA curriculum, students learn in a small group environment while developing strong technical skills in playing several gamelan instruments, all of which combine to create multilayered and elaborate music. This includes instruments that play melody, regulate time, underline musical structure, and elaborate melodies and vocal components.
In addition to graduate major lessons, non-major lessons, and classes in music theories and systems, students gain a cultural awareness and understanding of the various roles gamelan music plays in Indonesian life through courses in Balinese gamelan (orchestra), Javanese gamelan, gadon (small orchestra), gender wayang (metallophone quartet), male and female dance, and, periodically, classes in kecak (monkey chant) and gong suling (flute ensemble). Also explored are the global integrations and creations taking gamelan musical elements forward in the 21st century, and how they play a significant role in aligning tradition with innovation.
Students study, practice, and perform in many contexts, as well as engage with theoretical course offerings, dance classes, and private and small group lessons. The course of study trains students to exhibit the strong listening, observation, and imitation skills necessary to learn such music; and thus, the ability to convey such oral teaching traditions and methods to others as well.
All Balinese and Javanese Music and Dance MFA candidates are required to pass a mid-residence recital and a graduation jury and recital in order to obtain the degree.
