DAY 2: SPACE ODYSSEY 

9 to 12 pm

Orientation Check-In & Meet Your Orientation Leader
Main Building, Reception Desk & Main Gallery
All new students are asked to check in for New Student Orientation in the main academic building by the reception desk. During check-in, students will receive their student IDs, the orientation schedule, and swag bag. Additionally, students will meet their Orientation Leader who will be their wonderful space guide! Orientation Leaders serve as peer-to-peer advocates, supporters, and resourceful CalArtians to new students. This student led team works diligently to ensure their successful entrance, navigation, inclusion, and participation into CalArts.

 

12 to 1 pm

Meet your orientation group, share successes, discuss achieving your goals, plans for campus engagement, and conversations about creativity!

Session 1: CalArts Declassified: New Student Guide Panel Discussion
Main Building, Bijou
First year students have the opportunity to ask questions about the CalArts student experience in an anonymous setting during this panel discussion led by the orientation leaders. This is an excellent opportunity to help our new CalArtians develop their confidence.

Session 2: Mission Log Letters & List
Main Building, Blue Wall
This session is designed to get you thinking about the great beyond. Write a letter or make a video in which you reflect on your journey here at CalArts and  all the amazing things you hope to see and accomplish.

Session 3: Expo Planet
Main Building, Steve’s Cafe 
An ExpoPlanet is a planet that exists outside of our solar system. As a first-year CalArts student, you are being launched into your own solar system and the planet. This workshop will assist you in developing a thriving and fulfilling life on your new planet.

Session 4: Space Invaders
Main Building, Coffee House Theater ​
When space invaders show up, together we will construct a toolbox to safeguard against them. The goal of this session is to help you navigate your "Space" by preserving yourself and establishing healthy personal boundaries, time management, effective communication of needs, and self advocacy.

The First Year Experience (FYE) Program 
Main Building, Main Gallery
The First Year Experience (FYE) program engages students in active learning and reflection to explore community, identity, and citizenship themes. It supports students in developing a sense of belonging as a member of the CalArts community. The FYE initiative engages incoming students in their social and emotional development to supplement their academic and artistic development. It introduces students to practical skills and campus resources to enhance identity development, self‐efficacy, and self‐care.
 

5 to 6 pm

Orientation Group Time
Main Building
Connect with your Orientation Leader and your Orientation group to debreif your first day of Orientation. Check-in with your Orientation Leader for your meeting spot!

6 to 7 pm

To Infinity and Beyond! Lightyear 
Main Building, Graduation Courtyard 
Come watch Lightyear with us! Legendary space ranger Buzz Lightyear embarks on an intergalactic adventure alongside ambitious recruits Izzy, Mo, Darby, and his robot companion, Sox. As this motley crew tackles their toughest mission yet, they must learn to work together as a team to escape the evil Zurg and his dutiful robot army that are never far behind.
