Move-In and Institute Orientation Events

These are the Institute orientation events that take place over move-in weekend; please check back often as additional details and events will be added closer to the weekend. The school-specific orientation activities will be emailed to students. As a reminder, students are welcome to bring two (2) family members-guests on campus for moving and for orientation activities. This is to help limit the density of people on campus. Masks are required while in indoor spaces on campus.


  • All day: Move-in to Chouinard and Ahmanson dormitories
     
  • 10 am – 4 pm: Family & Friends Lounge with the Office of Alumnx & Family Engagement
    Location: Mom's Cafe, Chouinard Hall
    Stop by for a cool drink and a break from the heat and move-in activities. Take a moment to write your student a note that we will deliver in their mailboxes during the early weeks of the semester and take a family photo to mark the special occasion. Get your gear at the CalArts Store Pop Up Shop and meet here for campus tours.
     
  • 11 am: Residence Hall & Campus Tours for Families
    Location: Departs from Mom’s Café, Chouinard Hall
    In this exclusive walking tour for families, student tour guides will share their experiences at the Institute and answer questions. Tours last 45 minutes to an hour. Accessible tours are available. 
     
  • 12 pm – 6:30 pm: Lunch at Steve’s Café (Open for parents & students)
    Steve's Café will be open from 12 - 6:30 pm for both lunch and dinner. Steve's Cafe offers a wide range of food choices, including vegan and vegetarian options. Seating ranges from intimate spaces to group tables—all intended to make the café a hub for the entire campus. Enjoy a limited menu of lunch options designed for parents to try during Move-In Weekend.

    Come “dive-in” and join other CalArts students as we watch Jaws while at the Chouinard pool.

    Join us in the Mod Lobby to meet CalArts President Ravi Rajan and Provost Tracie Costantino along with other Institute senior leaders. Enjoy live music, appetizers, and drinks as you meet other CalArtian parents and family members.

  • 8 -10 pm: "Beetlejuice" Movie Screening

    Join CalArts students as we watch Luca while at the LuLu Von Hagen Courtyard.

    Join your orientation group for dinner to kick off Orientation for 2021! You will meet your Orientation Leader, the rest of your orientation group, and enjoy some delicious food. 
     
  • 7 - 8:30 pm: Drag Show
    Location:  LuLu Von Hagen Courtyard
    Immediately following dinner, your orientation group will make their way over to the Lulu Von Hagen Courtyard for a drag show!
     
  • 8:30 pm: Movie Screening: "The Rocky Horror Picture Show!" 
    Location: LuLu Von Hagen Courtyard
    Join us for a sing-along of the cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the LuLu Von Hagen Courtyard. 

  • 9 am - 2 pm: Shopping Runs
    Location: Departs from the Blue Wall
    Meet at the Blue Wall for a ride to shopping opportunities throughout Santa Clarita. Busses will be leaving every 30 minutes to go to the stores. The last bus to the stores will leave at 1pm with the final bus returning to CalArts at 2pm.

  • 3 - 4 pm: Minute to Win It Olympics by Small Groups
    Location: Various locations around campus
    Join your small group to compete in the Minute to Win It Olympics to decide who will be the 2021 CalArts Minute to Win It Olympic Champion!
     
  • 5 - 7 pm: Orientation Fiesta Taco Feast
    Location: Chouinard Hall Pool
    Come and join the Orientation Team while enjoying a dinner by the Chouinard pool with music and games.

    We invite all new undergraduate and graduate students to attend our virtual welcome event hosted by the School of Music and Dean Volker Straebel.

    Location: Lund Theater
    This event is required for all BFA 2 dance students. There will be donuts, coffee and juice provided.

    This placement exam is required for ALL incoming undergraduate and graduate music students.

    This event is required for all BFA 1 and BFA 2 dance students.

    This placement exam is required for ALL incoming undergraduate and graduate music students who did NOT place into MTHY-001 (Fundamental Musicianship) on the Theory Placement Exam.
