Federal Work Study is a financial aid award for part-time employment program for students with financial need funded partially by the federal government. There are many opportunities available to students with Federal Work Study awards to work on campus at CalArts or in community service positions. Students are paid bi-weekly and receive their paychecks directly from the Cashier's Office each pay period.
Community Service Opportunities - CalArts also offers students the opportunity to earn Federal Work Study funds by participating in community-based work, including the Community Arts Partnership (CAP), Side Street Projects, etc. CalArts supports this program and has agreements with several community nonprofit organizations. If you've been awarded Federal Work Study and you're interested in a community service position, please contact the CalArts Financial Aid Office.

There are several types of jobs for students at CalArts:
Specific job duties vary depending on the office or department in which the student is employed. Detailed job descriptions are available from each hiring office. Students are encouraged to ask questions about specific duties when they apply for a student employment position.
Level 1 - Requires little or no previous training or experience. Work is performed under close supervision, and tasks and procedures are often or a routine nature requiring little decision-making. Work is frequently reviewed, consequence of error is minimal, and accountability is limited. Wage Range: $9.00 to $10.00 per hour.
Level 2 - Requires some previous training, experience or knowledge of basic skills. May require some mechanical ability. While work is generally supervised, some independent judgment and initiative may be required. Work is reviewed periodically, errors are correctable and accountability is increasing. Skills are easily acquired. Wage Range: $9.25 to $10.25 per hour
Level 3 - Requires previous training or experience, specialized knowledge, skill or ability. May include responsibility for the safety of persons or property. Work involves some supervisory responsibility, and accountability may include work done by others. Scope of operation reaches other work units. Supply of workers with necessary skills, specialized knowledge or experience is limited. Wage range: $9.50-$10.50 per hour.
Level 4 - Consistently requires specialized knowledge, skills or abilities, and/or advanced managerial skills and past experience. Often accountable for work done by others. Scope of operation is across and/or beyond the institution. Wage range: $9.75 to $10.75 per hour
Level 5 - Requires extremely specialized knowledge, skills and abilities. Positions may require graduate students with rare exceptions. Duties often include teaching and/or administration. Requires travel or working off campus. Base pay rate would be determined by position with maximum base rate of $10.00 per hour. Wage Range: $10.00 to $25.00 per hour.
