Valencia, CA, - The Herb Alpert School of Music at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is pleased to announce the second spring 2013 event of the Wild Beast Concert Series . A concert under the stars, on Saturday, April 27 at 7 p.m. will feature the incendiary beats of West African music and dance. The concert is in the Wild Beast music pavilion on the CalArts campus in Valencia with lawn seating for the audience.
Massive, intricate rhythms churn joyously into the night in this celebration of the music, singing and dance of the Ewe and Dagomba people of Ghana. Performing under the direction of Yeko Ladzekpo-Cole and Andrew Grueschow , the CalArts African Music and Dance Ensemble is joined by special guest artist Prosper Nudzor—an exceptional Ghanaian drummer and dancer—in what is sure to be one of the highlights of CalArts’ 2013 World Music and Dance Festival.
“Prosper Nudzor, a vibrant, virtuosic drummer in the West African Ghanaian style, brings a dynamism to the stage that electrifies while enveloping audiences in the depth of his rich musical tradition,” said David Rosenboom, dean of The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts.
Nudzor will perform with the students and faculty of the CalArts African Music and Dance Ensemble. In this unique program, students from all disciplines at the Institute learn to perform traditional music and dance of West Africa from master teachers. Their instruction includes singing in the languages and playing percussion instruments indigenous to the region.
The Herb Alpert School of Music offers rigorous training in an unrivaled variety of musical styles and cultures—ranging from Jazz and World Music to Music Technology and Experimental Sound Practices. The Wild Beast Concert Series offers audiences the opportunity to experience the Institute’s vibrant musical heritage.
Designed by Hodgetts + Fung, The Wild Beast music pavilion has been dubbed a “mini Hollywood Bowl” for its delightful outdoor amphitheater setting. With open lawn seating, families are welcome and picnics encouraged at Valencia’s most intimate concert venue. A half hour north of downtown Los Angeles, CalArts is located just off the McBean Parkway exit of Interstate Highway 5 in Valencia.
