CalArts and Tenlegs Develop Technology for Online Educational Workshops
Acclaimed institute of the arts and innovative start-up company partner to offer distance learning in the arts
Students anywhere in the world can receive individualized instruction
Next workshops scheduled for Fall 2012
Valencia, CA, & New York, NY (July 23, 2012) – California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), and Tenlegs, an innovative social media network for independent and emerging artists, have announced a new strategic partnership to develop technology for online educational workshops in the arts and simultaneously establish a next-generation platform for artistic collaboration.
CalArts, a leading center for graduate and undergraduate study in the performing and visual arts, and Tenlegs jointly launched a pilot workshop, Online Animation Portfolio Development, in June 2012. As a result of its success, both beginning and advanced level workshops are scheduled for Fall 2012. The workshops will target students interested in exploring Concept Design and Visual Development while enhancing their college application portfolios.
While taking the workshop will not guarantee admission to CalArts or any other institution, the workshop will provide students an opportunity to create, under professional guidance, unique and comprehensive portfolios to accompany their applications to the colleges of their choice.
Taught by John Mahoney, an acclaimed animator and a faculty member in the Character Animation Program in CalArts’ School of Film/Video, the online workshop offered assignments ranging from concept design for future animations, 3D models, graphic novel ideas and gallery work. Students received individual video critiques of their projects.
CalArts is working with Tenlegs to accelerate the development and utilization of an innovative digital workspace that will enable off-site collaborative capabilities for CalArts students around the world. The partnership builds on CalArts’ groundbreaking efforts to promote creative models in the artistic community.
Using the Tenlegs product suite, CalArts plans to quickly test and rollout a digital service that will transform the digital classroom into an artist’s workspace.
“We are very excited about CalArts’ collaboration with Tenlegs. This represents another step in our mission to explore new educational models and to more effectively mentor and inform our world-wide community,” said Don Matthewson, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at CalArts.
While the partnership’s initial efforts are focused on creating a dedicated digital workspace and intuitive design tools to facilitate seamless online collaboration among students, the partners believe these tools and platforms will ultimately be capable of engaging the broader CalArts community, as well as to offer resources to the worldwide community of artists.
“Given CalArts' global focus, openness towards technological experimentation, and outstanding record of allowing innovative artists to thrive, we feel that CalArts is well aligned with Tenlegs’ mission of putting artists first,” said Amit Gupta, Founder & CEO of Tenlegs.
CalArts has a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the arts through six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theater. CalArts encourages students to explore and recognize the complexity of the many aspects of the arts. It is supported by a distinguished faculty of practicing artists and provides its Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts students with the hands-on training and exposure necessary for artistic growth. CalArts was founded in 1961 and opened in 1962 as the first institution of higher learning in the United States specifically for students interested in the pursuit of degrees in all areas of visual and performing arts. It later added media and literary arts. CalArts also operates the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT) in Downtown Los Angeles.
