Valencia, Calif., May 13--Students in California Institute of the Arts' Community Arts Partnership Sony Pictures Media Arts Program (CAP/SPMAP) will present a free screening of original animated shorts on Saturday, June 6, at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro. Featuring new worlds brought to life by the vibrant imaginations of young animators, each short film in the program is conceived, edited and directed by CAP/SPMAP participants.
The keynote speaker for this event will be award-winning animation artist Jorge R. Gutierrez, an Institute alumnus and creator of the Emmy Award-winning Nickelodeon series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.
Prior to the screening, audience members will be invited to participate in a series of hands-on drawing and animation workshops in the lobby of the lavish art deco Warner Grand Theater.

The Sony Pictures Media Arts Program is CAP's after-school program for youth between the ages of 10 and 14. In this 30-week program, students learn drawing, animation and new media techniques, and create original films. They have the opportunity to experiment with multiple forms of animation, such as stop-motion and pixilation using clay sculptures and puppets, as well as animation with watercolors, charcoals and pastels. Taught by CalArts faculty, students and alumni, classes are held twice a week at five sites: Banning's Landing Community Center in Wilmington, Center for the Arts Eagle Rock in Eagle Rock, San Fernando Gardens Community Service Center in Pacoima, Watts Towers Arts Center in Watts, and the William Reagh Los Angeles Photography Center near MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. SPMAP is a partnership involving the CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP), the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
CAP is program of California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and links the Institute and the diverse communities of Los Angeles County through free after-school and school-based arts programs for youth. CAP provides the youth in these communities with challenging learning environments for artistic experimentation and creates access to higher education. Through these CalArts faculty-mentored programs, CAP provides CalArts students the opportunity to teach, to refine their artistic abilities, and to redefine the role of artists, arts education, and the arts in society.
Mirroring the disciplines taught at CalArts, CAP offers in-depth training in more than 40 individual program covering jazz, printmaking, photography, digital media, video, drawing, animation, dance, theater, puppetry, writing, chamber music, global music and graphic design. CAP each year engages 5,000 students while another 10,000 participate in short-term workshops.
Approaching its 20-year anniversary, CAP is unique in its field. The employment of CalArts faculty and students as CAP instructors and the location of classes in the neighborhoods it serves set CAP apart from other community arts programs.
CAP has received numerous awards, including the John Anson Ford Human Relations Award from the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations in 2008, and in 2006 the Ovation Award for Community Outreach from the Los Angeles Stage Alliance and the Coming Up Taller Award for outstanding community arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of America's young people.
