REDCAT and CalArts Present Caden Manson / Big Art Group in "SOS"
"The theatre of images for the new century is born: rapid, without concessions, violent and consuming itself at 100 miles an hour." Le Télégramme (Brest)
"As challenging as it is original, as freaked out as it is dazzling, far beyond traditional schemas and classical conceptions." Midi Libre (Montpellier)
Los Angeles, CA, March 12, 2009--REDCAT and CalArts present SOS by Caden Manson and Big Art Group. The company known for pushing the limits of performance and video art has set their latest opus, SOS, in a forest of technology. By lacing its original hall-of-mirrors multimedia stagecraft with flurries of livewire choreographed action, SOS blends nine performers, two musicians, a half-dozen projection surfaces and 22 live-edit cameras into a spectacle of surveillance, cinema and live performance
For Big Art Group's second appearance at REDCAT, following the presentation of their acclaimed piece Flicker in January 2006, collaborators Caden Manson and Jemma Nelson draw on the primal themes of The Rite of Spring--the paradigm-shattering collaboration between Stravinsky and Nijinsky--to stage their own contemporary rite of rebirth. Perfectly timed for Easter, the work confronts themes of rebirth, sacrifice and ritual in a supersaturated, hyper-acquisitive society. Through a panoptic "Real Time Film" technique, everyday rituals of renewal are abstracted and refracted in video, morphed into metaphors of war and environmental degradation--and set into a meditation on sustainability, survivalism, immolation and revolution.
Caden Manson/Big Art Group is a New York City performance company founded in 1999. The company uses the language of media and blended states of performance in a unique form to build culturally transgressive and challenging new works. Since its inception, it has toured nationally and internationally and produced five new major pieces including the 'Real Time Film' trilogy Shelf Life, Flicker, and House of No More.
