Student Identity Project

Students, faculty and staff may often choose to use names, pronouns and gender identities that are not in line with their legal documentation. Through both our technological systems and daily usage, CalArts is supporting and honoring all community members through this new project.

Student Identity Project Launch Party: Jan. 24

Nicolazzo Z

To celebrate the implementation of system-wide chosen name, pronoun and gender options for our community, CalArts will host a launch party on Thursday, Jan. 24. Nationally recognized scholar and author Dr. Z Nicolazzo will join students, faculty, and staff for a day of conversation exploring questions of personal identity, with particular focus on the experience of today's college students.

Dr. Nicolazzo currently serves as Assistant Professor of Trans* Studies in Education at the Center for the Study of Higher Education and as a member of the Trans* Studies Initiative at the University of Arizona. Copies of her book Trans* in College will be available at events during the day for the first 100 students and faculty who RSVP in advance. Copies of Trans* in College will also be kept on reserve in the library.

  • Faculty/Staff Conversation, facilitated by Andrea Fontenot (Faculty, Critical Studies; Chair, Academic Council), 12 pm on January 24 in the Bijou.

Student Identity Form Launch: January 2019

The Student Identity Project is officially live! This means all members of the CalArts community are able to update their identity information throughout all Institute-managed systems using a simple form available through the secure HubHelper site.

If you would like to update your name, pronoun, or gender in CalArts records, please log into HubHelper to access the Chosen Name and Gender Identity forms.

Because Names and Pronouns Matter

The Student Identity Project is a student-driven, Institute-wide initiative that upgrades CalArts' technological infrastructure to both honor and align with the diverse identities of all students, staff and faculty. When fully updated, the software systems used across campus on a daily basis will incorporate chosen name, chosen pronoun and gender identity.

Through the creation of a more inclusive space for the full diversity of all identities — both on campus and online — the Student Identity Project should have a positive impact every member of our community, and not just those who request to change their identifiers as a result of the project.
