Description

This course is structured around supporting student progress on independent work. It could be a independent study, directed study, lesson, or mentoring.

Considerations for Course Design

• If you are leading an independent study, directed study, or lesson, a course shell will not be automatically created for you on the Learn LMS before the term begins. You can request a shell if you want one, however—fill out the Learn LMS Request form on the Hub to initiate the request.
• Make sure you have an active Zoom account. A complete checklist for getting started is here.

Considerations for Facilitation

• In your first meeting, discuss with the student their goals around their work; how they will share their progress and how often you will communicate. We recommend email for exchanging work in progress or files, but you could also set up a Google Drive folder if appropriate.
• To help coordinate meetings with students or mentees, we recommend setting up a way for students to book appointments with a guest—here is how to do it with Google Calendar and Zoom.
• Practice getting familiar with Zoom so you can focus on leading discussion with your student or mentee. Using Zoom for Remote Instruction has some good tips.
