CalArts is assembling resources for near-term and ongoing faculty training and support. 

Faculty Training for Teaching Online

This is a 2-week intensive training course comprised of 12 hours total instruction (4 1-hour “live” sessions over Zoom plus 8 hours asynchronous instruction delivered through Learn). Faculty can choose to participate in a “certificate track” for professional development credit OR just audit the course. 

This is a substantially different and more comprehensive offering from the Teaching on Learn course that was offered in Spring 2020. If you completed that course in the Spring 2020 semester you are encouraged to sign up for this course as well.  More information here on the syllabus, or watch the video.

 

Overview of Faculty Training for Teaching Online

We encourage all faculty to consider taking this training course, regardless of your familiarity with Learn or online teaching, or whether you’re using Learn or not. We will be leading multiple sessions of the course starting July 20 and continuing through August. The instructors will endeavor to accommodate faculty preferences around start dates and level of expertise. Additional sections may be added depending on demand. 

IMPORTANT NOTES: 

  • Faculty may only sign up for training when they have a confirmed teaching contract for the Fall 2020 semester.
  • Special faculty who are paid hourly should include the hours they spend engaging with training as part of their course prep hours so they can be compensated for their time preparing for online learning. 
  • We have put in a request in order to compensate all faculty for the training and are waiting for a decision at this time.

Academic Remote Support

To support CalArts' transition to fully remote learning this fall, the Office of the Provost is offering additional support to CalArts faculty for planning, developing, and running their courses remotely.

A small team of experienced faculty and staff are available for 20-minute 1-on-1 appointments, or group drop-in sessions (Wednesdays, 12-1 pm). 

You need to book an appointment on the central booking calendar below. All appointments and drop-ins will be conducted over Zoom; the Zoom link will be emailed to you after you confirm your appointment.

NEW: Teaching and Learning Discussion Forums

In conjunction with the Friday Zoom meetings around teaching and learning organized by the Director of Faculty Affairs, this is a supplemental resource to exchange ideas for adapting your curriculum to remote instruction, and to participate in discussions around institute-wide initiatives for building cross-metier collaborations and community.

The Online Teaching Resource (OTR) Library is a knowledge base of how-to guides, templates, and support documents for instructors developing or facilitating online, remote or hybrid courses. Most of the content in this guide is created by the online team in the Office of Global Initiatives and Extended Studies at CalArts.
