CalArts Spring Guide Return to Work on Campus

We are looking forward to the day when our community of artists returns to full engagement on our Valencia campus. Over the past year, students, faculty and staff have persevered through many challenges to continue the important work of arts education. As we come back together in the fall, our mission will be our guide: CalArts is a multidisciplinary community of artists. Our ongoing educational endeavor is grounded in openness, experimentation, critical engagement, and creative freedom. Through artistic practice, we transform ourselves, each other, and the world.

This spring, many offices will continue to operate remotely, while others will continue to operate on campus as they have over the past year. Over the remaining weeks of spring semester and during the summer, we will continue to add necessary staffing to campus in the schools and offices as needed to support students and campus operations.

Return to Work Guidelines for Employees

As we gradually return, the health and safety of the campus community will be our top priority. Within the Return to Work Guidelines you’ll find many of the steps we are taking to ensure your safety and well-being.

Phased Return to Campus FAQs - Spring 2021

As a residential campus with a strong sense of community there is great excitement about seeing one another again, but we also know that some of us might not feel prepared to return right away. We have prepared a list of FAQs in order to try to address your initial questions.

Supervisors are charged with staffing schools and offices to meet needs as we build toward a return to students living and learning on campus in Fall 2021. Supervisors will work with Human Resources and the COVID Response and Implementation Task Force (CRIT) to meet safety and health guidance - such as the number of people able to occupy spaces on campus and timing for cleaning protocols.

Please review the FAQs below and check with your supervisor if you have been working remotely to understand the timeline for your return.

Faculty and staff can work on campus now as long as all safety and health protocols are followed. You should check-in with your supervisor to make plans for your return to on-campus work.

First, consult your supervisor to evaluate options to facilitate a return to work or to explore remote work, a modified work schedule, and/or a temporary job reassignment.

If your position requires you to return to campus and you are unable or unwilling to do so there may be options available depending on your circumstance. For example, if you require medical related accommodation you must contact the Office of Human Resources. Other options may include exploring flexible work arrangements or requesting unpaid leave of absence. These options may be discussed with human resources.

CalArts is not requiring employees to be vaccinated at this time, however, we strongly encourage all employees and students to be vaccinated. Visit the CDC or my.turn.ca.gov to schedule an appointment.
