Sony Pictures Media Arts Program (SPMAP) 

October 2019 - June 2020

In partnership with Sony Pictures and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, CAP offers free after-school animation classes for youth participants (ages 11-18) at 5 partner sites throughout Los Angeles County.

Classes are co-taught by 3-5 CalArts Animation alumni and students, covering a range of animation & filmmaking techniques. These include stop motion & claymation, drawn animation on paper and computers, 2D, 3D, and digital puppets, character design, lip sync, storyboarding, world-building, paint on glass, collage film, sound design, voice acting, and more. Students are introduced to a range of techniques at the beginning of the class via short projects. Towards the end of the class, each student will create their own animated film using the technique of their choice, with one-on-one guidance from their instructors. All equipment and supplies are provided, including laptops, DragonFrame software, Adobe Creative Suite, drawing tablets, DSLR cameras, and a daily snack.

Classes are 30 weeks long and run from October-June. Classes do not meet on holidays and breaks. Site locations, meeting times, and registration links are below.

CAP Music at Watts Towers Arts Center Campus

October 2019 - March 2020


In partnership with the Watts Towers Arts Center Campus, CAP offers free after-school music lessons in voice and piano for youth participants ages 11-18. Lessons are half an hour in length, twice per week, taught by CalArts music school alumni. After the 20-week course of lessons, each student will be invited to perform at a final culmination recital in late March. All equipment and supplies are provided. Classes do not meet on holidays and breaks. Lessons will be held on Wednesdays from 4-7PM and Saturdays from 11-2PM.

Self Help Graphics

October - December 2019 & February - April 2020

In partnership with Self Help Graphics, CAP offers a free after-school visual arts class for high school youth participants in Boyle Heights. This course includes a range of artforms including painting, sculpture, printmaking, filmmaking, photography, and more. Classes are taught by CalArts alumni and current students. The 20-week course of classes culminates in a final exhibition in early May. All equipment and supplies are provided. Classes do not meet on holidays and breaks. Classes will be held on Mondays from 4:15-7:15PM in the Fall semester and Tuesdays from 4-7PM in the Spring semester.
