Sony Pictures Media Arts Program (SPMAP)

October 2019 - June 2020

In partnership with Sony Pictures and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, CAP offers free after-school animation classes for youth participants (ages 11-18) at 5 partner sites throughout Los Angeles County.

Classes are co-taught by 3-5 CalArts Animation alumni and students, covering a range of animation & filmmaking techniques. These include stop motion & claymation, drawn animation on paper and computers, 2D, 3D, and digital puppets, character design, lip sync, storyboarding, world-building, paint on glass, collage film, sound design, voice acting, and more. Students are introduced to a range of techniques at the beginning of the class via short projects. Towards the end of the class, each student will create their own animated film using the technique of their choice, with one-on-one guidance from their instructors. All equipment and supplies are provided, including laptops, DragonFrame software, Adobe Creative Suite, drawing tablets, DSLR cameras, and a daily snack.

Classes are 30 weeks long and run from October-June. Classes do not meet on holidays and breaks. Site locations, meeting times, and registration links are below.
