Maria Nicolacakis (MFA Theater '01), Secretary
Maria Nicolacakis is a performer, choreographer and educator. An Ensemble Member in the critically acclaimed Syzygy Theatre Group, she recently choreographed the L.A. Times’ “Best Bet” performance of Love’s Old Sweet Song. Currently, she is working as a television voiceover actor.
After graduating from CalArts with an MFA in Theater, Nicolacakis mounted her solo show, Sacrament, at the Next Theatre, and again as part of “15 Minutes of Fem” at the Arena Stage at the Theater of Arts (formerly the Egyptian Arena Theater), both in Hollywood. Nicolacakis performed in the inaugural production of The Center for New Performance’s production of King Lear both at the Brewery in Los Angeles, and in France at the Frictions Festival, sponsored by Theatre Dijon Bourgogne. Prior to coming to Los Angeles, Nicolacakis acted in several plays and improvised with the ImprovOlympic in Chicago. She toured nationally with The Illustrated Theatre Company and regionally with The Imagination Theatre Company in over 25 shows in repertory.
As an arts educator with these companies, Nicolacakis directed/choreographed original shows on tolerance and social awareness issues for their outreach programs, utilizing techniques from Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. She has extensive experience teaching acting to diverse populations in Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles—from at-risk youth in the inner city, to senior citizens in the suburbs.
Nicolacakis was a dancer prior to acting, most notably as a Harlequin in “Harlequinade” with the New York City Ballet Company. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Emerson College, Nicolacakis resides in Southern California with her husband and three children.
