Where can I find FAQ for newly admitted or deferred students for Fall 2021?

 

I-20, DOF, and F-1 Visa FAQ are located in the International Admission section.


  • This includes students who are transferring their SEVIS record to CalArts this summer.
  • You should enroll in a full-time course load for Fall 2021 to maintain your F-1 status.  (There are some exceptions.)  
  • You should follow the recommendations provided by your mentor/program director/academic advisor and take as many in-person and hybrid courses as possible.
  • We recommend traveling back to the U.S. after August 1. Even if you are directly traveling from the areas with travel restrictions, you should be able to enter the U.S.with the automatic NIE without contacting the U.S. embassy.  Please follow COVID test and quarantine guidelines by CDC.
  • To request leave of absence please complete the form. You will not be in F-1 status.
  • To request to be part-time please complete the form. Each program requirement is different. You will not be in F-1 status except for the final semester.
  • To be fully remote due to inevitable circumstances please email us. Please also consult with your school about your academic progresss, course availability, and in-person requrement if any.

  • You should enroll full-time for Fall 2021 for your F-1 status.  (There are some exceptions.)

  • We are issuing Fall 2021 I-20s so that you can be on campus for in-person components of the courses.  If you have questions about your I-20 and DOF please contact our office.
  • You can enter the U.S. for Fall 2021 with a valid visa and your new I-20.  We recommend traveling to the U.S. after August 1. Even if you are directly traveling from the areas with travel restrictions, you should be able to enter the U.S.with the automatic NIE without contacting the U.S. embassy.  Please follow COVID test and quarantine guidelines by CDC.
  • If you are applying for an F-1 visa the visa appointment should be after May 2, 2021. If you already have a valid F-1 visa you can use it. If you can't make an appointment before the school starts, make an appointment for a later date and request an expetided process.
  • The visa application fee is valid for one year and the validity is extended till September 30, 2022 in case of unavailability of visa appointments. Please contact the U.S. Embassy/Consulates for more information.
  • A SEVIS fee is for one SEVIS number.  If the SEVIS number is new on your Fall 2021 I-20 you have to pay the SEVIS fee.  SEVIS fee expires in 12 months. If you paid SEVIS fee early last year it may have expired.
  • To request leave of absence please complete the form. You will not be in F-1 status. Your I-20 will be canceled.
  • To request to enroll part-time please complete the form. Each program requirement is different. You will not be in F-1 status. If Fall 2021 is your final semester please contact our office.

  • Reactivation of F-1 status (I-20) is not possible if you have been out of the U.S. for more than 5 months.

  • You should enroll in a full-time course load to maintain your J-1 status.
  • You should follow the recommendations provided by your mentor/program director/academic advisor and take as many in-person and hybrid courses as possible.
  • You could apply to renew a J-1 visa if it’s expired in summer if you have or will have active J-1 status in Fall 2021.
  • Please contact the nearest US embassy for the NIE if you are traveling back to the U.S. from the areas with travel restrictions.
  • If you need to change your visa status to F1 for Fall 2021 please contact our office.
