CalArts launches new UI/UX Design Specialization on Coursera

On Sept. 17, CalArts launches a new UI/UX Design Specialization on Coursera, the world’s largest online learning platform, as part of the Institute’s Open Learning initiative.

The UI/UX Design Specialization is a four-course sequence offering practical, skill-based instruction centered around a visual communications perspective. Developed by Michael Worthington and Roman Jaster, faculty in the Program in Graphic Design in the School of Art, these courses bring a design-centric approach to user interface and user experience design. Learners will summarize and demonstrate all stages of the UI/UX development process, from user research to defining a project’s strategy, scope, and information architecture, to developing sitemaps and wireframes.

This new Specialization builds on the success of CalArts’ Graphic Design Specialization, which has had nearly 290,000 enrollments since the first course launched in October 2015.

Open Learning at CalArts is a joint initiative led by CalArts’ Office of the Provost and the Office of Global Initiatives and Extended Studies, and brings together a community of engaged online learners from around the world interested in creativity and creative education. Through partnerships with massive open online course (MOOC) providers Coursera and Kadenze, CalArts currently offers several courses and certificates (called Specializations or Programs) in graphic design, game design, poetry, music technology and web design.

Coursera is an online learning company based in Mountain View, California. The company was founded in 2012 by Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng, two professors from Stanford’s Computer Science department, as a way to open their on-campus courses for anyone to take. Since then, Coursera’s platform has grown to more than 150 universities and education providers and more than 35 million learners enrolled worldwide. CalArts has been a Coursera partner since 2012.

Enrolling in the Specialization requires a monthly subscription fee, but anyone can audit the individual courses within the Specialization for free.
