On Monday, the world lost a fierce champion of artists and of the critical role arts play in society: Robert "Bob" Fitzpatric, the second president of CalArts.

Due to a broken water line, CalArts’ main campus is closed to all but essential employees until further notice.

Travel advisories are in effect related to the current storm, which is expected to bring heavy rain, high winds, and the possibility of power outages and flooding to our area today through Tuesday, Feb. 6. 

A message to the CalArts community from President Ravi Rajan, Provost Tracie Costantino, and Dean of Art Steve Lam

Because of the limited power and network access on campus, we are asking that students, faculty, and staff please make arrangements to work remotely. In addition, campus is closed to outside visitors for the day.

As leaders and fellow members of CalArts’ community of artists, we are deeply troubled by recent actions that appear to target individuals on our campus related to their identity or perceived stance on the conflict in the Middle East.

Tropical storm and flash-flood warnings are currently in effect for our campus and the surrounding areas through Sunday evening, with heavy rain and dangerous road conditions expected. Please avoid all nonessential travel during this time. 

While CalArts does not directly consider an applicant’s race as a “check-mark” part of our admission process, we are fiercely committed to building a community that reflects and advances the full diversity of our society.
