School of Music Visiting Artist

Steve has performed and recorded with many well-known and highly esteemed musicians. Notably, he was a longstanding member of the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band, Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, Steve Swallow Quintet and Joey Baron’s Killer Joey. Steve is currently a member of the John Patitucci Electric Guitar Quartet, Jon Cowherd Mercy Project, Adam Nussbaum Lead Belly Project and Ben Allison Band. Steve has also performed regularly with such artists as Madeleine Peyroux, Eliane Elias and Norah Jones, as well as toured extensively performing at countless international music festivals, theaters and clubs.

Steve has six recordings as a leader, as well as appears as a sideman on over 100 recordings. His most recent albums, “Healing Power - the music of Carla Bley” and “Blue Has a Range,” are on Sunnyside Records.

Additionally, Steve is on faculty at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York and is also co-author with editor Don Sickler of the Thelonious Monk Fakebook, Hal Leonard Publishing.

Artist in Residence Series- Fall 2022

Planned Activities:  In Fall 2022, the Herb Alpert School of Music at the California Institute of the Arts presents the very first Artist In Residence Week. From Monday, November 7th to Friday the 11th, four artists will visit the CalArts campus to give presentations/workshops, perform, collaborate, and engage with the student body and the School of Music’s facilities. Most instruction will be suspended that week, allowing students to fully immerse in the programming.

Resident activities may include but are not limited to solo performances, group concerts, presentations and workshops on topics of the resident's choosing, in studio collaborations between residents and students, live ensemble collaborations between residents and students, and panel discussions. Steve is the Charlie Haden Artist in Residence.
