Play Like a Girl is the latest installment of Eve Beglarian’s sprawling multimedia commonplace book, A Book of Days. For nearly thirty years, Beglarian has been building a catalog of short pieces that combine found texts, original music, and video or still images. Eventually, there will be 366 pieces, one for each day of the year. This installment will focus on “nasty women.” The first female judge in America (Wyoming, 1870), a fierce poem by Bangladeshi troublemaker Taslima Nasrin, and the naked joyousness of Bulgarian women’s choral singing are some of the inspirations that knit the evening together. In residence for two weeks at CalArts, sponsored by the Alpert Foundation, Alpert Award-winner Beglarian will work with extraordinary Los Angeles pianist Vicki Ray and colleagues and students from CalArts, including faculty Matt Barbier, Alison Bjorkedal, Meltem Ege, Stuart Fox, Phil O’Connor, Rachel Rudich, and Luke Storm to prepare the performances.
