CalArts Center for New Performance / Duende CalArts presents Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol’s Veracruz, a conference and an intervention, a relief. Veracruz is the Mexican state in which Luisa Pardo grew up. It is a thin strip of land with coast and mountains, much poverty and violence, murders, disappearances and silence. It contains many territories traversed by Cortés on his journey to conquer Mexico.
Pardo’s lecture/performance looks closely at the problems of a state of the Mexican Republic, which has been governed by an alliance between drug traffickers and politicians for more than a decade. Her intervention seeks to embrace the many voices, images, and imagination of people who, like Pardo, miss her land as a fertile place for art, for critical thinking, for expression, for love, for living.

Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol is a group of artists based in México, led by Luisa Pardo and Lázaro Gabino Rodríguez. In 2003 they began to develop projects as a mechanism to link work and life, to erase borders. Their work seeks to provide meaning, to articulate, dislocate, and unravel what is generally overlooked.
