Diversity Grants

The Diversity Grant and Intercultural Arts Project (ICAP) Grant are funding opportunities for faculty and students to support projects and performances related to diversity and multiculturalism.


Introduction

In general, the committee will only fund projects one time. Preference will be given to first time applicants whose proposals meet the committees mentioned below criteria.

The committee will review proposals on the dates listed below and welcomes applicants who would like to make a brief verbal presentation to the committee. Please indicate on your proposal if you would like to speak to the committee.


Nick England Intercultural Arts Project Committee (ICAP) Grant

The Nick England Intercultural Arts Project (ICAP) was established at CalArts in 1988 to help increase and sustain the presence of artists from many cultures, with an emphasis on artists who live and work beyond the Eurocentric sphere while maintaining the aesthetic perspective of their specific backgrounds. The program seeks to foster the mutual exchange of aesthetic, social, and political concerns through artistic interaction among diverse artists, the CalArts community, and the wider constituencies of Southern California.

Grant proposals should include an instructional component and an event. The event should be open to the entire Institute and take place during the academic year. Faculty should be directly involved in the project. There is an expectation of financial support from the School that is sponsoring the project. 

Schools, programs or individuals may submit project proposals for consideration. Grant applications are reviewed by a subcommittee of the Equity & Diversity Committee. The subcommittee assesses and ranks the applications on the basis of the following criteria: 

  • The proposal clearly articulates how the project addresses the goal of the grant, which is "to foster the mutual exchange of aesthetic, social, and political concerns through artistic interaction among diverse artists, the CalArts community, and the wider constituencies of Southern California."
  • The proposal includes a clearly articulated plan for how the event component will engage the entire Institute, including how the event will be publicized and made accessible to the larger CalArts community.
  • The proposal clearly defines the instructional component and its intended audience.
  • The project is viable, with respect to the project's proposed timeline, budget, and level of department sponsorship.

 While there is no cap on ICAP grant amounts, awards tend to range between $500-$1,500. This is a competitive grant opportunity and not all proposals are guaranteed to receive funding. Additionally, it is not unusual for selected proposals to be awarded partial funding, so please prepare accordingly. A strong proposal will include a detailed budget that accounts for other revenue sources and indicates what funding is anticipated versus secured.

  • CYCLE 1  | Projects occurring during Fall 2020 [Sept. 9 – Dec. 13]
    Application will open on Friday, Oct. 9.
    Deadline: Friday, Nov. 6 (If your project has already taken place at the time of application, please be prepared to provide a qualitative impact report with your application.)

  • CYCLE 2  | Projects occurring during Winter Session 2021 [Jan. 13 – Jan. 24]
    Application will open on Monday, Nov. 7th.
    Deadline: Friday, Dec. 11

  • CYCLE 3  | Projects occurring during Spring 2021 [Jan. 27 – May 10]
    Application will open on Wednesday, Jan. 13.
    Deadline: Friday, Feb. 12

  • ICAP Grant Application​ — *Please note: A completed Verification of Sponsorship Form (below) is required in order to submit the application. 

    • If your project has already taken place at the time of application, please be prepared to provide a 1-3 page qualitative impact report along with this application.

    • If your proposal is awarded funding and your project has already taken place at the time of award notification, please be prepared to provide a 1-3 page qualitative impact report within 30 days of notification.

Diversity Grant (for students)

COVID provisions: All applications must comply with Institute guidelines. Proposals must be for online/remote work.

Modest grants of $300 to fund student projects in support of diversity at CalArts through interaction, education, and practice are available. Collaborative proposals involving participants from more than one school are encouraged, and projects must be open and accessible to the Institute as a whole. It is important to clearly articulate how your project promotes diversity. Please note that this grant does not support travel. Grant applications are reviewed by the Grants Subcommittee of the Equity & Diversity Committee. By applying you are consenting to have your work shown on the Diversity website.

The subcommittee assesses and ranks the applications on the basis of the following criteria:

  • Clarity with which the project articulates how it addresses/engages with issues of diversity.
  • Clarity and viability of the project.
  • Accessibility/engagement/participation of the larger CalArts community.

Fall 2020
  • Call for applications: Oct. 9

  • Award notifications: Nov. 23 
  • Projects must be completed by end of Winter Session, January 22, 2021
Spring 2021
  • Call for applications: Feb. 1, 2021
  • Deadline for entries: March 1, 2021
  • Award notifications: March 15, 2020
  • Projects must be completed by end of semester, May 17, 2021

How Do I Submit Receipts for Reimbursement?

Grants are paid on a reimbursement basis upon the submission of original receipts to Ashley E Walters, Provost Office. 

  • Please read the directions for reimbursement prior to submitting your receipts.
  • Reimbursement Deadline: end of project or May 31, 2021, whichever is soonest
