A registered nurse—Audrey Hampton, R.N. director, Student Health Services (SHS)—provides general care, such as first aid for injuries, and treatment for minor illnesses and conferences on health problems. Students are referred to physicians and/or nearby hospitals when necessary. Information is available on a wide range of health matters (e.g. free and anonymous HIV testing) in the health office, D208, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday, excluding holidays and special occasions, ext. 7830)
General first aid is provided to all students, regardless of medical coverage. If it is necessary for a student to see a physician, they can attain a referral from the SHS department. All students are required to have a health record on file with the SHS department. Upon receipt of the admission packets, all students should fill out the health record and obtain a physical before registering for school.
The health form may be mailed, along with the rest of the admissions packet or brought to the SHS department in person. If the form is misplaced, students may obtain an extra copy in SHS.
Health Insurance for Students
Students may purchase medical coverage through the Institute for a minimal fee, which is added to their tuition, unless students wish to waive their insurance because they have other insurance. For the 2014-2015 academic year, coverage begins at 12:01 am on September 1, 2014 and ends at 11:59 pm on August 31, 2015.
Fees for the 2014-2015 Academic Year
Each CalArts student must be covered with health insurance. CalArts offers a plan provided by Anthem Blue Cross Life & Health. A $735 premium is charged for the Fall semester (four months’ premium) and $1,470 is charged for the Spring semester (eight months’ premium) - for a total of $2,205. A detailed brochure about the CalArts health plan is being finalized and will soon be available to view at www.4studenthealth.com/calarts. If you are already covered by another health insurance provider and do not need the Institute's health insurance coverage, you must complete an insurance waiver via the online tuition bill payment during the registration process.
For Incoming/New International Students
Beginning in Fall 2014, all new international students entering CalArts will be required to purchase the CalArts Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) provided by Anthem Blue Cross. (Note: all continuing international studens are eligible to waive the CalArts SHIP as usual). Very limited waivers may be granted to incoming international students who can provide proof of comparable coverage by a government- or embassy-sponsored plan. This evidence should be brought to the Dean of Student Affairs for evaluation. Exceptions are rarely provided and may not be given for any of the following reasons, including but not limited to: financial hardship, indicating that you have a better plan or that somebody else was waived from this requirement.

The Institute insurance (Blue Cross Life and Health) includes coverage for the following benefits:
Office visits, hospital inpatient and outpatient services, alternative services (e.g., chiropractic, acupuncture), outpatient prescription drugs (available at any pharmacy). Please note that the plan is compliant with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
The plan does not cover:
Immunizations, physicals, vision or dental.
As a new member in the Blue Cross Life and Health Plan, you will receive a health identification card in the mail which is to be used whenever you need medical attention and to purchase prescriptions at any pharmacy. Your original health ID card is good for each academic year as long as you are an enrolled CalArts student.
Blue Cross Life and Health has incorporated into the coverage access to the Blue Cross Prudent Buyer Plan (PPO) network of hospitals and Physicians. Covered persons will lower their out-of-pocket expenses by utilizing the Blue Cross PPO Network. Network access provides benefits nationwide for covered medical expenses incurred at 80% of the negotiated rate when treated by network providers and provides benefits worldwide for covered medical expenses incurred at 60% of fair and reasonable expenses when treated by non-network providers.
Benefits for prescriptions drugs are available at any pharmacy. Students using network pharmacies will pay a $10 co-pay and 44% of the negotiated rate at the point of purchase. No claims forms are to be submitted for reimbursement. Students using non-network pharmacies must pay 100% of the drug cost at the point of purchase. The student must then submit a claim form for reimbursement of up to 44% of the Drug Limited Fee Schedule amount allowed. Students are responsible for costs in excess of the amount allowed for non-network pharmacies.
