Valencia, April 22--California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is pleased to announce the final event of the inaugural season of The Wild Beast Concert Series , presented by Levitt Pavilions and produced by The Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts .
Worldwide Percussion offers exhilarating pan-global drumming from the CalArts World Percussion Ensemble, an experimental performance group combining instruments and musical structures from a spectrum of cultures. The evening will feature guest artist and Brazilian pandeiro maestro Guello—and honor a founding faculty member of CalArts’ renowned World Music Program, Alfred Ladzekpo, on the occasion of his retirement after 41 years.
Ghanaian Sogo drummer Ladzekpo will join an all star line-up of musicians from around the globe including members of CalArts’ World Music faculty: Indian tabla master Swapan Chaudhuri, Indonesia’s I Nyoman Wenten, master Persian percussionist Houman Pourmehdi, and multi-cultural percussionists Randy Gloss and Andrew Grueschow.
David Rosenboom, Dean of the Herb Alpert School of Music commented on the evening’s honoree. “Alfred is not only one of the great musicians in his field, but a gifted and committed educator. A pioneer of World Music education, he was one of the founders of the CalArts African Program along with his brother, Kobla Ladzekpo. Since then, Alfred has brought students from every discipline together, creating community and enriching the culture of the entire Institute for over forty years. The African Music and Dance Ensembles have been the beating heart of the school.”
The Wild Beast music pavilion, on the CalArts campus, has been dubbed a "mini Hollywood Bowl" for its delightful outdoor amphitheater setting. With open lawn seating, families are welcome and picnics encouraged at Santa Clarita's newest open air concert venue.
"We are thrilled to present the inaugural season of the Wild Beast Concert Series at CalArts, taking our program beyond performances presented in Levitt pavilions across the country," noted Sharon Yazowski, Executive Director of Levitt Pavilions. "This is a natural partnership. Worldwide Percussion reflects the kind of high-quality musical experiences that we are committed to presenting at Levitt venues. Our mission is to build community through making the arts accessible to all. We are extremely excited to expand our efforts into the Santa Clarita Valley."
