The REDCAT Gala, held on March 16, 2013, kicked off a year of celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater. Launched by CalArts in the fall of 2003, REDCAT was unveiled as part of the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall and charged with a mission to present emerging and established artists whose work fuels the evolution of art and culture. In its remarkable 10-year history, REDCAT's adventurous programming has extended CalArts' role as a center for creation, innovation and experimentation into the heart of downtown Los Angeles and earned a global reputation for fostering an unbounded vision of contemporary art-making.
The 2013 REDCAT Awards were presented to The Walt Disney Company, whose award was accepted by Disney President and CalArts Trustee Alan Bergman, and photographer and CalArts alumna Catherine Opie.
Performer and Alpert Award Winner Cynthia Hopkins led the guests in a bird call symphony, while actor and funnyman Jack Black served as the night's Master of Ceremonies.
