California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Announces the Inaugural Evelyn Sharp/CalArts Summer Choreographic Residency
Kate Weare of The Kate Weare Dance Company, acclaimed educator and choreographer Laurence Blake, and Rosanna Gamson, Artistic Director of Rosanna Gamson/World Wide, will take part in this year’s residency.
Valencia, CA (January 23, 2014)—In partnership with the Evelyn Sharp Foundation, The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) has commissioned three nationally recognized artists and companies to participate in the inaugural Evelyn Sharp/CalArts Summer Choreographic Residency. This year’s recipients, New York-based Kate Weare Company, helmed by CalArts alumna Kate Weare (BFA ’94), and acclaimed faculty artists Laurence Blake and Rosanna Gamson, Artistic Director of Rosanna Gamson/World Wide, will convene on the CalArts campus in Valencia, California from May 19 to May 30, 2014.
“This residency is an extension of the high volume of creative work that happens within the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance throughout the academic year,” said Stephan Koplowitz, Dean of the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance. “The Evelyn Sharp Foundation has provided us with the opportunity to recognize exceptional choreographers from across the country and bring them to CalArts so that they can work here alongside our remarkable faculty artists.
”To facilitate the creation of new works, the residency includes studio space for rehearsals and opportunities for creative research, as well as access to theater facilities and support staff. To conclude the two-week process, choreographers will showcase work developed during their residencies at an invitation-only showing in CalArts’ Sharon Disney Lund Dance Theater.
“The timing of the residency is positioned so that students will have the opportunity to engage with these artists separate from the obligations of the academic year,” continues Dean Koplowitz, emphasizing that the residency will benefit CalArts’ students, as well as the selected choreographers.
Each choreographer or company will have the opportunity to hire a current School of Dance student to participate as an understudy and artistic intern, as well as the support of additional School of Dance students and alumni as desired or needed. Kate Weare will also return to CalArts during the 2014-15 academic year for a series of master classes with School of Dance students.
The Evelyn Sharp/CalArts Summer Choreographic Residency is graciously supported by a two-year grant from the Evelyn Sharp Foundation.
